Hey Folks!

I'm at it again.  And yet again, thanks goes to Ying for filming me being a big nerd.  Yes, I'm a nerd, get over it; I have :)

So I was wanting to watch Napoleon Dynamite. But I didn't have a way to prop up my iPhone.  I went online to look for instructions on creating any kind of make-shift stand but all I came up with was some triangle thing made out of a dollar bill and also a retail item called the Bat Rest. The Bat Rest is a great idea... but I wanted something NOW. (Kids these days; they always want instant gratification!).  So I tried to make my own bat rest out of scrap cardboard... it was ... full of fail.
:( Cardboard was too soft.

After all this work, I could have seriously just gotten two strips of scotch tape and taped the damn iphone to the wall or something. But that would've been too easy!  So I look around my desk for other options... oooh PAPERCLIP!

Watch the Video!

Anyway, long story short, after a couple of failures, I came up with this shape:
Download the bend-marks pdf template here  (Scroll down to learn how to use the template)

Cool huh?

With the iPhone:

How to use the Template:

Get the template here. Print it out with your favorite PDF reader. Be sure not to stretch the document. If you have a ruler, do a reality check to make sure the document didn't get resized when printed.  When the paper clip is straightened out, it should be the same length as the grey line in the template.  A pair of pliers will make your job a lot easier.

1. Take a jumbo paper clip and straighten it out. Use a fine tip sharpie to mark all the bend points:

2. Bend the 7.25 and 8.25cm points. Let's call this the "V"

3. Next, Bend the 4.25cm point. You need to make the bend perpendicular and angled a bit outwards from the "V"  Also notice that the bend is an "acute" angle.

4. Bend the 1.0cm point for the tip.

5. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the other side and you're done! Here's a pic of 2 stands from different positions:

I'd like to point out the importance of the bend angles. Acute-angled bends from step 3 give the stand the correct support to prop up your iphone without falling over. The obtuse-angled bend in step 4 needs to stick out far enough so the tips of the paper clip won't rub against your iPhone and scratch it.  You can play with the width of the stand and/or the green angles to adjust how much your iPhone tilts.

Here's a video of just the stand without all the jabber

That's it! Thanks for reading~!

Brilliant. I'm always appreciative of design that "does a lot with a little." Thanks for linking to this from LifeHacker!

Dude! Sweet!

[ thinking of using this to prop up small portable hard drives on my desk also! ]
Monday, September 29, 2008 1:02:01 AM (Pacific Daylight Time, UTC-07:00)
Ooooh I just made it in under 10 mins (without proper tools, pliers really would have helped) but it worketh! My small portable USB harddrive can sit horizontally in it now. (It measures 7cm x 12cm x 1.25cm.) Btw, thanks for using metric units so people around the world can enjoy this!

Also, my preferred pdf reader is Foxit reader and it didn't print out the lines the way you meant it to be. Not sure what is up with that. :/ Didn't stop me from making the EnVaDoR iphone stand though! :)

Hi Caro! I think both fixit and acrobat try to print out the PDFs to "stretch to fit" mode. I'm going to see if I can't just make the PDF in the size of the whole page so that won't matter. Good to hear you found another cool use for the paper clip stand!! :)
Monday, September 29, 2008 10:28:15 AM (Pacific Daylight Time, UTC-07:00)
Hey Dean, what I meant by the lines not printing out the way you meant them to print was, they didn't print at all for me! (I did make sure that "actual size" was selected rather than "stretch to page".) All I got was a sheet with your cm markings all in a line, but no lines with littler lines intersecting them. Could be a Foxit problem?

Anyway, just thought of another thing. To further prevent possible scratches to the device being held, and for a bit of friction too, you could use one of those rubber-covered paper clips! Trying now ... :)

tried it with a metal coat hanger and worked pretty well. a little sturdier anyhow. thanks for the simple but great tutorial.

Cool idea, thanks!

I'm going to try an XL version of this with a coat hanger for my tablet PC.

Works great - and so quick and easy! Just this morning, I was trying unsuccessfully to prop my phone up against stacks of paper and binder edges. Simple solution!

I did it, it was easy, it totally works, and now I can rest in landscapey peace. Thank you for thinking so I don't have to!

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I was so happy to hear that lifehacker and gizmodo reported my little How-To today. Ying has no idea what LH and the Giz are. She just doesn't get it! CUZ! My lips hurt real bad!

One word.....genius!

My life as an office worker has not been in vain, I just put an order in with my office supplies section for 100 paperclips.

Hi Dean,

I saw your paperclip stand on the Dutch iPhone club site (http://www.iphoneclub.nl/16434/maak-iphone-standaard-paperclip/)
I tried it immediately and it's great!!

Thanks!

Hey, great stand. I improved my use of it a bit by adding some replacement mechanical pencil erasers onto the paperclips. I slowly pushed the erasers onto the clips directly through the center of the erasers (longways, like putting a worm on a hook). Two little pieces near the top bend to cushion the top of the iPhone, two pieces at the bottom near the up-curve and a longer piece on each "arm" that hits the desktop and extents to the end of the paperclip. Seems to keep the iPhone more secure and less likely to get scratched.

Just a thought.

Nice! Just made it (slightly tweaked) for my mobile phone, which now sits on top of my desktop PC in work, instead of in my back pocket. Cool!!!!

... wow thanks, great idea !! I made mine of an encased cable electricians use. The encase is a good protection against scratches and enables a better stand on slippery surfaces.

Hey, hello.
I am at work right now and have found a mention about your paperclip stand on Gizmodo, which got the post from Lifehacker.
I have done the little stand and now my desk looks even tidier!
Thanks for sharing this simple solution with everyone.
I wish you all the best.

Thanks!
I like that you used the metric system instead of inches. I just bought a HTC Touch HD, and it has the same sise as the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch, so it works perfectly!

Hey, another cool addition to the paper clip is cutting an old head phone wire and using the rubber coating and sliding the paper clip into and then it grips better and doesn't scratch the iPhone, it works really well!

Freakin' awesome. Proudly displaying the flip clock function on my desk at work and I've gotten many compliments on the simple but brilliant design of the clip holder.

This is terrific. I used a plastic-coated paperclip so it can't scratch the phone. You rock!

I love this! Simple. Frugal. Ingenious. Bravo!
I'd been searching for an iPhone base to take advantage of the alarm clock application so I can charge the phone on my nightstand and wake up in the middle of the night and know I need to get more rest.
You made my day!
